"Shauna gave me an ultimatum basically because she was going to move in to a new house. "Every time I moved the stuff and got a spare space I wasn't able to do what I wanted to do. "That was my fault for collecting so much that I couldn't move anything out," Matthews replied.

"I was coming out with things, I had things to say. "I don't normally, like I struggle to get on with people, but the night I met her and the nights after I don't know, I was a different person," he told the jury at Bristol Crown Court. The couple fell out with Mrs Donovan in an argument about her car and lost contact with her, Matthews said. Shortly after they got together, Hoare's mother Lisa Donovan moved house and Matthews offered to drive her to school.
